Eagles fall to Tritons in non-conference bout

ST. LOUIS—Despite a combined 30 kills from senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange and freshman outside hitter Lauren DeShaney, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team suffered a tough 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 25-20 non-conference loss at the hands of the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday night.

The host Tritons (9-4) used a 7-1 run and a .333 attacking percentage to earn the six-point victory over the Screaming Eagles in the opening set. Missouri-St. Louis hit .407 and used a 9-3 spurt in the second frame to claim a nine-point victory and build a two-set advantage heading into the third stanza.

USI (7-5) dominated the third set offensively as it racked up 19 kills and hit a blistering .500. LaGrange and DeShaney each had six of their respective 15 kills in the third game as the Eagles cut Missouri-St. Louis's lead in half.

Despite jumping out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth set, the Eagles' attacked stalled as it hit just .158. The Tritons used a 4-0 run to tie the frame at 10-10; then used a 6-1 run to break a 15-15 tie and eventually claim a five-point victory.

Junior setter Ashley King came on in the second set for the Eagles and finished with a team-best 33 assists, while sophomore libero Kayla Heldman added a team-best 18 digs.

USI returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday when it hosts Rockhurst University in a 5 p.m. match at the Physical Activities Center. The Eagles conclude their brief two-match homestand Sunday at 1 p.m. against William Jewell College.
