EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team begins post-season play Saturday at 5:15 p.m. when it hosts the University of Indianapolis at the Physical Activities Center in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Saturday's game, which will be aired live on the News 25 Sports Channel (Insight Digital Channel 524; WOW Digital Channel 111; Time Warner Digital Channel 184) and on WPSR 90.7 FM, is the third meeting between the Screaming Eagles and the Greyhounds.
USI lost the first meeting, 101-100, in triple overtime at the PAC in January, but got retribution two weeks ago with a 60-58 win in Indianapolis. The winner of the third meeting will advance to the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament, which are March 4 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Senior guard
Amie Newhart averaged 27.5 points per contest to lead the Eagles in their two games against the Greyhounds. Newhart, who had career-high 39 points in the triple-overtime loss to Indianapolis, scored a game-high 16 points in USI's win over the Greyhounds two weeks ago.
Dating back to last season, Newhart is averaging 28.3 points in the last three outings against Indianapolis.
Fellow classmate
Ellen Young chipped in 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in the two meetings with Indianapolis, while freshman forward/center
Nicole Hazemi added 8.0 points in the two contests.
Indianapolis was led in the two meetings by senior forward/center Katie Lyons and freshman guard Katy McIntosh. Lyons, who had 32 points in the win at the PAC, averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while McIntosh chipped in 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
The Eagles (16-10, 12-6 GLVC), who fell to seventh in the latest NCAA II Midwest Region rankings after going 1-2 in the last week of the regular season, clinched the GLVC East Division title last Thursday with their 76-53 win at Bellarmine University.
Young leads the Eagles for the season with 14.8 points per game, while Newhart is second on the team with 14.3 points per appearance. Senior forward/center
Courtney Perry is contributing 7.9 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.
Indianapolis (14-12, 9-9 GLVC) has lost three of its last four games leading up to the GLVC Tournament. Lyons leads the Greyhounds with 11.0 points per game, while McIntosh is chipping in 10.7 points and 3.2 assists per appearance.
