EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Principia College at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (1-0) is looking to continue the momentum it gained from its season-opening victory over Midwest Region foe Saginaw Valley State University Saturday night. The Screaming Eagles shot nearly 50 percent from the field and held the Cardinals to 1-of-14 shooting from downtown as they began their season with a victory for the second straight year.
Senior guard
Cootie Leeberg led the Eagles with a career-high 17 points, while freshman forward
Brooke Valentine began her collegiate career with 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard/forward
Kristin Raker added 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Eagles.
Principia, an NCAA Division III institution, begins its 2011-12 season Tuesday at the PAC after posting a 5-19 record, 1-15 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a year ago. The Lady Panthers return their top two scoring threats in senior forward Lindsay Sydness and junior guard Sarah Corbitt.
Sydness averaged a team-best 15.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per appearance last year, while Corbitt averaged 15.0 points and a team-high 2.7 assists per contest.
Tuesday's game marks the first-ever meeting between USI and Principia in women's basketball. The Eagles continue their season-long four-game homestand Friday at 6 p.m. when they take on Mid-Continent College.
