ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—Trailing by a goal with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation, it looked as if the University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team's road woes were going to continue in its Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday evening at Lewis University.

The Screaming Eagles (5-6-1, 5-4-0 GLVC), however, got goals from junior forward Susan Ellsperman and freshman forward Makenzie Brinker in the 81st and 102nd minutes, respectively, to defeat the host Flyers, 2-1, in double overtime and earn their first road win of the year.

USI, which was 0-5-1 away from the friendly confines of Strassweg Field heading into its match Friday, took three consecutive shots on goal after an Ellsperman corner kick in the 81st minute. Freshman defender Maura Hulme's shot following the corner kick began the frenzy, while senior defender Lavonia Lewis's  ensuing shot that ricocheted off Flyers' goalkeeper Arianna Nie, who had two straight saves, set up Ellsperman's turn at tying the contest.

The third attempt proved to be the charm as Ellsperman found the back of the net for the fourth time this season to put the Eagles into a 1-1 tie. Lavonia Lewis was credited with her first assist of the year on the play.

After 19 minutes of scoreless soccer, freshman defender Katelan Carneal set up Brinker for a breakaway goal to give the Eagles the victory. Carneal was credited with her first assist of the year, while Brinker racked up her third goal and first game-winner of the year.

Defensively, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Bodamer recorded her fifth victory of the year after giving up just one goal and recording three saves.

USI returns to action Sunday at noon when it travels to Somers, Wisconsin, to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Audio for Sunday's match can be accessed at gousieagles.com.
