Volleyball ranked 6th in regional poll
Hosts UW-Parkside, Lewis this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team is ranked sixth in the first NCAA II Midwest Region rankings as it gets ready to host its final Great Lakes Valley Conference home matches of 2011 against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and No. 20 Lewis University.

Friday night's match against UW-Parkside is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Physical Activities Center, while Saturday's Senior Day match against Lewis is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Live stats and video for both matches can be accessed at gousieagles.com.

USI (17-7, 12-2 GLVC), which is tied with the University of Indianapolis for first in the GLVC, is one of six teams from the conference and four from the East Division to be listed in this week's Midwest Region rankings. Northern Kentucky University was ranked second, while Indianapolis and Lewis were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

Missouri University of Science & Technology and the University of Missouri-St. Louis were ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, while the GLIAC's Hillsdale College and Ferris State University were first and third. Saginaw Valley State University and Northern Michigan University were seventh and 10th, respectively.

The Screaming Eagles enter this weekend's matches having won 10 of their last 12, including the last eight GLVC contests. USI is looking for the season-sweep of both opponents this weekend after posting come-from-behind five-set victories at Lewis and UW-Parkside to begin the conference season.

UW-Parkside (13-13, 9-5 GLVC) is coming off a tough three-set loss at Lewis Tuesday night and is looking to snap a two-match losing streak when it visits the PAC Friday night. The Rangers, who are 9-2 at home this season, have struggled on the road, as they are just 4-11 in matches played away from their home court.

Lewis (19-5, 11-3 GLVC), which is trying to earn the GLVC's top seed for the fourth consecutive year, enters this weekend's action having won six straight matches and 14 of its last 15 contests. The Flyers visit Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday at 7 p.m. before coming to USI Saturday.

USI will honor senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange and senior defensive specialist Krista Coccaro as part of its Senior Day festivities prior to Saturday's match. LaGrange, the reigning Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week, has accumulated more than 1,000 kills in her USI career, while Coccaro has recorded more than 850 digs in her four seasons at USI.

USI concludes the 2011 regular-season home schedule Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Urbana University. The Eagles visit Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine University next weekend to conclude the regular-season slate.
