ST. LOUIS, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana junior midfielder
Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) sent the match into overtime and scored the game-winning goal as the Screaming Eagles defeated Maryville University in double overtime, 4-3, Friday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI rises to 3-9-1 overall and 2-8-1 in the GLVC, while Maryville falls to 3-10-1, 2-9-0 GLVC.
McClure led USI's second comeback of the match when he scored with 1:51 remaining to send the contest into overtime. The junior midfielder ended the match in the second overtime with his second goal of the day with 4:15 left to play. The goals were McClure's third and fourth of the year.
The Eagles scored quickly to begin the game when sophomore forward
Rush Dugger (Hansen, Kentucky) recorded an unassisted goal 1:12 into the match. The goal was Dugger's third of the season.
Maryville responded with a goal to even the score, 1-1, at 36:16 and took the lead, 2-1, after halftime at 52:42. The Eagles responded 70:43 when freshman defender
James Kennedy (Waterford, Michigan) tied the match, 2-2, off a pass from junior midfielder
Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Illinois). The goal was Kennedy's second of the season.
The Saint took the lead for a second time, 3-2, with 2:05 remaining, before McClure sent the match into overtime with the match knotted at 3-3.
Overall, Maryville outshot the Eagles, 15-14, and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. USI junior goalkeeper
Ben Dempsey (Evansville, Indiana) picked up the win, making four saves.
The Eagles complete the conference portion of the five-match road trip Sunday when they visit the University of Missouri-St. Louis. UMSL, which is 5-4-3 overall and 4-4-2 GLVC, are hosting Kentucky Wesleyan College this evening in St. Louis. Sunday's kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
USI finishes the five-game road trip October 19 when it travels to Oakland City University for a 2:30 p.m. showdown.
