EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's and women's soccer teams open GLVC action Sunday when they travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky, to play Northern Kentucky University. The women's game starts at 11 a.m. (CDT), while the men's contest kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
The USI women's team (1-0-0) starts league play after winning it season opener, 2-0, over Bethel College at Strassweg Field. Senior forward
Meagan Kempf scored the first goal of the year for the Screaming Eagles in the first half, while freshman forward
Sam Houston sealed the victory with her first collegiate goal in the second half.
The ninth-ranked NKU women's squad (0-0-1) played its season opener Friday and settled for a scoreless, double-overtime tie with The University of Findlay in Highland Heights. The Norse are the defending GLVC champion and were picked win the GLVC again in 2010.
USI, which was predicted to place seventh in the conference this year, broke an eight-game losing streak to NKU by upsetting the Norse last fall, 1-0, at Strassweg Field. The Norse lead the all-time series, 11-4-0.
The USI men's team also got off on the right foot with a 4-1 win over Saginaw Valley State University Thursday night. The Eagles were led by senior forward
Simon Rawnsley, who had a goal and an assist in the win.
The 21st-ranked NKU men's squad (1-0-0) posted a victory in its first match of the year Friday, winning 4-0 over Findlay. The Norse are picked to place second this year in the GLVC.
NKU won the only meeting with USI last season, 2-1, in overtime and has won the last six contests, while USI leads the all-time series, 14-12-2. The league coaches have forecast the Eagles finishing 12
th this year in the GLVC.
