Meagan Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) scored 8:36 into overtime to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-2 win over the University of Illinois-Springfield Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. USI rises to 6-3-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the GLVC, while UIS falls to 1-7-0 overall, 1-5-0 GLVC.
Kempf scored the game winner at 98:36 off a pair of assists by sophomore forward
Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana) and freshman forward
Jessica Scott (Louisville, Kentucky). The goal was Kempf's fifth of the season.
The Eagles had the early lead in the first half when sophomore midfielder
Paige Nuelle (St. Louis, Missouri) gave USI a 1-0 advantage 2:56 into the match with an unassisted goal. The goal was Nuelle's third of the year.
The Prairie Stars responded with a pair of unanswered goals at 19:24 and 34:16 to take a 2-1 lead. UIS would hold that lead as the squads went into the locker room at the intermission.
USI knotted the game up at 2-2 when junior forward
Nancy Newcomer (Parma Heights, Ohio) posted her fifth goal of the year at 58:42. She was assisted on the play by Ellsperman, who has a team-best seven assists this year.
Overall, The Eagles outshot the Prairie Stars, 22-11, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 10-5.
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field next weekend when it hosts Drury University Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Rockhurst University, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
