ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team got another 20-kill performance from junior middle blocker
Danielle LaGrange and another 50-assist effort by freshman setter
Jorae Bradbury as it held on for a 25-22, 25-15, 16-25, 25-20 victory over Harding University Saturday at the Triton Classic.
LaGrange, who had 24 kills in the Screaming Eagles' 3-2 victory over the University of Minnesota-Crookston Friday afternoon, finished the tournament by compiling a .359 attacking percentage and four blocks against the Bison of Harding, which entered the weekend receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
After seeing a late six-point lead dwindle down to a single tally in the opening set, the Eagles got back-to-back kills from LaGrange to turn back Harding's charge and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
USI (4-3) racked up 18 kills and a blistering .412 attacking percentage to run away with a 10-point victory in the second frame. With Bradbury serving, the Eagles turned an early one-point edge into a commanding 11-4 lead en route to a two-set led in the match.
Bradbury, who dished out 51 assists against Minnesota-Crookston on Friday, finished the match with 53 assists, a pair of aces, and 14 digs.
USI got a pair of blocks from LaGrange and Bradbury in a 6-0 spurt that gave the Eagles an 18-12 lead in the fourth and final set. The Eagles won the final three points of the frame to capture the five-point win.
In addition to LaGrange's 20 kills, the Eagles got 12 kills apiece from senior outside hitter
Brittani Oliver and sophomore outside hitter
Abbi Williams. Sophomore right side hitter
Emily Meyer added eight kills and a .316 attacking clip, while junior libero
Krista Coccaro finished with a team-high 18 digs.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles suffered their first three-set shutout of the season as No. 4 Washburn defeated the Eagles 25-15, 25-13, 26-24. LaGrange led the Eagles with a match-high 14 kills and a .417 attacking percentage.
Coccaro added 11 digs, while freshman defensive specialist
Kayla Heldman finished with a match-high 16 digs.
USI opens its 2010 home schedule Tuesday when it hosts Kentucky State University. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.
