PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team concluded action at GCU/Crown Plaza Tip-Off Classic with a 93-67 loss to host Grand Canyon University Saturday evening in Phoenix, Arizona. USI falls to 2-1 overall, while Grand Canyon goes to 4-1.
After the Screaming Eagles scored the first bucket of the game, the 'Lopes took control with an 8-0 run. The Eagles would close the gap to one, 17-16, with 11:47 left in the half, but the 'Lopes responded with a 31-11 run to lead at halftime, 48-27.
Grand Canyon continued to expand its lead throughout the second half, leading by 35 points, 77-42. USI did play better in the second half, shooting 53.6 percent (15-28), compared to 38.5 percent in the first half (10-26).
USI was led by senior guard Ellen Young (Salem, Illinois) with 11 points. Freshman forward Nicole Hazemi (Lombard, Illinois) followed with 10 points.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center after November 27-28 when they host the USI Thanksgiving Tournament. The tournament will feature USI, Bellarmine University, University of Saint Francis (Indiana) and St. Mary's University (Texas).
