EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team stumbled in the first round of the GLVC Tournament to Bellarmine University, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI finishes the 2010 campaign 12-6-1, while Bellarmine advances with an 11-4-2 mark.
The Knights scored the match's only goal in the first 45 minutes when BU forward Chelsea McCarty stole the ball from the USI defense and found the back of the net at 36:05. The goal was her second of the year.
After being outshot 13-3 in the first half, the Screaming Eagles' offense began to pressure the Knights with nine shots, four on goal. USI junior forward
Nancy Newcomer (Parma Heights, Ohio) appeared to have scored shortly after the intermission, only to have the goal taken away with an offside call.
Overall, the Knights outshot the Eagles, 22-11, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3.
Bellarmine advances to play top-seeded Northern Kentucky University November 5 in Highland Heights, Kentucky. NKU earned the right to host the semifinals and the championship match with a 2-0 win over eighth-seeded Drury University.
In the top half of the bracket, second-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside earned a trip to the semifinals with a 4-0 win over seventh-seeded Rockhurst University. Third-seeded Quincy University completed the semifinal bracket with a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded Missouri University of Science & Technology.
