USI loses to Western Illinois, 2-0

BOX SCORE: Western Illinois 2, Southern Indiana 0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team fell back to the .500 mark for the season and the homestand with a 2-0 loss to Division I Western Illinois University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI falls to 2-2-0 overall in 2009 and 1-1-0 in the five-match homestand, while WIU evens its record at 1-1-0.

The Leathernecks scored the only goal they would need in the first half at 40:46. WIU sophomore Demmi Vance scored on a penalty kick, hitting the top left-hand side of the goal. WIU had missed a chance to score earlier in the opening half on a penalty kick after USI senior defender Alison Conquest was given a yellow card after a foul in the penalty area.

The WIU lead was increased to 2-0 in the second half when freshman midfielder Courtney Bresnahan scored the final gaol of the match off the rebound of a shot by junior defender Jill Kevorkian.

The Leathernecks outshot the Screaming Eagles, 24-12 and had the advantage in corner kicks, 9-8. USI had several chances throughout the contest with eight of their 12 shots on-goal, but was never able to find the back of the net.

The Eagles resume GLVC action Friday when they host the University of Indianapolis for the third game of the five match homestand. Kick-off of the GLVC doubleheader is 5 p.m.
