FINDLAY, Ohio—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team used a 5-0 run late in the fifth set to turn back a fierce comeback attempt and defeat The University of Findlay 25-14, 27-25, 26-28, 17-25, 15-10 Saturday night in the TownePlace Suites Classic.
USI (5-3) dominated the opening set, holding the host Oilers to a negative .027 attacking percentage, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Oilers (2-5) charged back from an eight-point deficit to forge a game-point situation. USI, however, got a pair of kills from sophomore middle blocker Danielle LaGrange and another from senior setter Melanie Pund to pull out the second frame and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Like the second set, the Eagles saw Findlay comeback from a large deficit to make things interesting in the third frame. Despite serving for match-point on two occasions in the third game, USI saw Findlay use a 3-0 run to finish the set and extend the match to extra frames.
After the two teams swapped 7-0 runs to open the fourth set, Findlay went on a 16-4 run to build a 23-11 advantage. USI, though, used a 6-0 run to cut into Findlay's advantage and build momentum heading into the fifth and deciding set before the Oilers could close the fourth set out with the eight-point win.
USI set the tone early in the fifth frame, jumping out to an early two-point advantage, but the two teams found themselves knotted up at 7-7 midway through stanza. After a kill from senior outside hitter Courtney Bealor gave the Eagles a one-point edge, USI rode the serve of sophomore libero Krista Coccaro for four consecutive points and a commanding 12-7 lead.
The two teams swapped kills and attacking errors from that point as the Eagles closed out the fifth frame with a five-point win and a 3-2 victory in the match.
LaGrange, who was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging nearly three kills, 0.79 blocks, and a .385 attacking percentage in four matches, led the Eagles with 14 kills and a .310 attacking percentage against Findlay. She also had six blocks and nine digs in the victory.
Junior outside hitter Brittani Oliver added 10 kills and 12 digs, while Pund finished with six kills, 32 assists, 10 digs, and four blocks. Coccaro chipped in a match and career-high 26 digs, while senior middle blocker Ashley Henricks and senior right side hitter Kathi Hindman finished with six and five blocks, respectively.
USI returns to action Friday at 12:15 p.m. when it visits the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the UNO Volleyball Classic.
