Volleyball's quest for 500th win continues in Omaha

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team's quest for its 500th win continues when it competes in the University of Nebraska-Omaha Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday.

USI (5-3), which is two wins away from the program's 500th all-time victory, begins the weekend slate Friday at 12:15 p.m. when it takes on the host Mavericks (6-3), who are ranked 23rd in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll.

The Screaming Eagles also take on Cameron University (7-1) Friday at 4:45 p.m., Minnesota State University-Moorhead (7-2) Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and Angelo State University (7-2) Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Eagles are coming off a 2-2 weekend at the TownePlace Suites Classic in Findlay, Ohio. Sophomore middle blocker Danielle LaGrange was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 2.86 kills, 0.79 blocks, and a .385 attacking percentage in four matches.

Junior outside hitter Brittani Oliver continues to lead the Eagles' attack as she ranks fifth in the GLVC in kills (3.38 kps) and fourth in points (3.91 pps). Entering the week, the Eagles had six players ranked in the top 10 of seven different GLVC statistical categories.

Senior middle blocker Ashley Henricks was second in the league in attacking percentage (.362) and fourth in blocks (1.14 bps), while senior setter Melanie Pund was fourth in the conference in assists (9.33 aps). LaGrange was 10th in blocks (0.86 bps), while sophomore libero Krista Coccaro was sixth in digs (4.21 dps) and junior defensive specialist Janae Curnutt was ninth in service aces (0.46 saps).

As a team, the Eagles were ranked in the top four of five different GLVC statistical categories including blocks (2.07 bps, 3rd); digs (15.00 dps, 3rd); opponent hitting percentage (.145, 3rd); kills (12.38 kps, 4th); and assists (11.31 aps, 4th).

Following the UNO Volleyball Classic, the Eagles open GLVC play when they visit Bellarmine University September 18 and Northern Kentucky University September 19. USI opens its home schedule September 25 when it hosts Drury University.
