EVANSVILLE, Ind.
– The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team starts a five-match homestand and the 2009 GLVC schedule by hosting 14th-ranked Northern Kentucky University Thursday at Strassweg Field. Match time is 4 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles (1-1-0) started 2009 campaign by splitting a two-match road swing. USI opened the season with a tough, 3-2, loss at Division I Western Kentucky University, but bounced back with a 4-3 come-from-behind win at Bethel College.
Senior midfielder Kara Georgeff (Highland, IN) and sophomore forward Nancy Newcomer (Parma Heights, OH) lead the Eagles after two matches with two goals each. Georgeff had a goal in each match, while Newcomer erased USI's 2-0 deficit with both of her tallies in the win over Bethel.
NKU started its season last Saturday with an 8-2 win over Concord University. Thursday's match with USI also is the conference opener for NKU.
The Norse hold the advantage in the all-time series, 11-3, after taking last season's contest with the Eagles, 3-2, in Highland Heights. USI, which won three of the first four meetings of the series, has not had the upper-hand against the Norse since 1999.
Following the USI-NKU contest on Thursday, the five-game homestand includes matches against Western Illinois University on September 6; the University of Indianapolis on September 11; Saint Joseph's College on September 13; and the University of North Alabama on September 16.
