Men's soccer hosts #2 NKU Thursday

Paul Hutchens
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team will be tested Thursday when it hosts second-ranked Northern Kentucky University to open the 2009 GLVC and home schedule. Match time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles (0-1-0) got their feathers ruffled in their season opener, falling to Martin Methodist College, 5-1, on Saturday. USI freshman forward Jeff McClure (Indianapolis, IN) had the only highlight by giving the Eagles a 1-0 first-half lead. The goal was McClure's first as a collegiate player.

The Norse began their 2009 campaign by sweeping a pair of matches in their John Toebben Classic. NKU started tournament play by defeating West Virginia Wesleyan University, 3-1, and finished tournament action by defeating Lake Erie University, 6-1.

USI leads the all-time series with NKU, 14-11-2, but the Norse have held the upper hand the last five seasons with five straight victories. NKU won the only meeting of last season at home, 5-1.

The last USI win over NKU came in 2003 when the Eagles defeated the Norse, 1-0, in double overtime.

Thursday's match is the start of a three-match homestand for the Eagles that also includes GLVC matches against the University of Indianapolis on September 11 and Saint Joseph's College on September 13.
