MCKENZIE, Tenn. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore forward Nancy Newcomer (Parma Heights, OH) scored a pair of goals and freshman midfielder Paige Nuelle (St. Louis, MO) scored the game-winner as the Screaming Eagles came back to defeat Bethel College, 4-3, Monday afternoon in McKenzie, Tennessee. USI goes to 1-1-0 overall, while Bethel goes to 0-2-0 in 2009.
After Bethel built a 2-0 lead by the intermission, USI's offensive kicked into gear in the second half. Newcomer started the Eagles' offensive explosion with a pair of goals to tie the match in the first seven minutes of the final half.
The Eagles took their first lead five minutes later when senior midfielder Kara Georgeff (Highland, IN) recorded her first goal of the season. Georgeff made the score, 3-2 at 57:36.
The Wildcats, who are ranked 23rd in the NAIA preseason poll, bounced back to tie the score, 3-3, at 71:19 and set the stage for Nuelle. She scored the game-winner and her first collegiate goal at 78:28.
Overall, USI out shot Bethel, 14-9, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
USI resumes action Thursday with the home and GLVC opener against preseason No. 20 Northern Kentucky University at Strassweg Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.
