BIG RAPIDS, Mich.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat the University of Minnesota-Crookston 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 26-24 Friday afternoon in its season-opener at the Ferris State University Bulldog Classic.

USI (1-0) hit .452 in the second game as it tied the match at a set each, then used an early 6-0 run and a .378 attacking clip in the second stanza to build a 2-1 advantage.

The Screaming Eagles battled back from a 16-11 deficit in the final frame to close the match out in four sets.

Junior Brittani Oliver had career-high 24 kills and a .373 attacking percentage to lead the Eagles, while senior middle blocker Ashley Henricks had 11 kills and attacked at a .444 clip. Senior setter Melanie Pund racked up a match-high 51 assists to go along with 14 digs and three blocks, while sophomore libero Krista Coccaro had a match-high 17 digs.

The Eagles also got a solid contribution from freshman outside hitter Abbi Williams and sophomore middle blocker Danielle LaGrange. Williams had nine kills and a .316 attacking percentage in her first career collegiate match, while LaGrange finished with six kills and a team-high four blocks.

USI squares off with Northwood University in an NCAA II Midwest Region battle at 4 p.m. (CDT) Friday.
