Eagles' offense grounded by Quincy

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team ran into a buzz-saw in the form of Quincy University sophomore pitcher Torie Bunzell Friday. Bunzell (15-8) held the Screaming Eagles to just three hits as the Hawks defeated USI 6-1 in the first game of a GLVC doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. Game two was canceled due to rain.

Quincy (18-19, 9-2 GLVC) put runs across in the top of the second and third innings, then scored twice in both the third and fourth frames to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Eagles (9-30, 1-12 GLVC) got some momentum going in the last half of the seventh inning as they sandwiched a walk in between a pair of singles to plate their lone run. Sophomore designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) drove in USI's run with a single that nearly cleared the leftfield fence.

Sophomore pitcher Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs off three hits in 2.2 innings of work. McClellan (3-12) struggled with her control as she issued four walks and hit a batter in her stay inside the pitching circle.

USI begins an eight-game road swing as it visits Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday in Owensboro, Kentucky. First pitch is slated for noon.
