Thieroff leads USI to series win over Drury

Box Score: Southern Indiana 6, Drury 2

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior right-hander Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) led the 25th-ranked Screaming Eagles to a 6-2 win and 3-1 series victory over Drury University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 17-6 overall, 7-1 GLVC, and 3-1 in the GLVC West Division, while Drury falls to 14-11, 5-3 GLVC, and 1-3 in the division.

Thieroff (1-0) pitched eight-plus innings to record his first win of the year and record the longest outing of his Eagle career. He pitched around nine hits, allowed one run, and struck out one. Sophomore right-hander Cody Brandenstein (Evansville, Indiana) finished the ninth for Thieroff, allowing two hits and one run in one inning of work.

At the plate, Thieroff helped his cause by starting run-scoring rallies in the second and fourth innings and scoring three runs in the game. He was one-for-two in the game with a double and a pair of walks.

USI sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) also provided the Eagles with an offensive lift by driving in a pair of runs, while junior catcher Kyle Rowley (Indianapolis, Indiana) came off the bench to drive in a pair of insurance runs with a two-single in the eighth.

The Eagles finish the nine-game homestand with an 8-1 mark and are 12-2 at the USI Baseball Field this season.

USI goes on the road for the next five games, starting with a single-game at Saint Joseph's College Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Eagles will finish the road swing next weekend with a four-game series at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
