EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team flew past Spalding University, 18-2, Friday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI improves to 4-5 overall, while Spalding goes to 1-6.
The Screaming Eagles scored their 18 runs on a season-best 17 hits with seven players recording at least two. The USI offense got all of the scoring they would need with a five-run second inning, highlighted by the second home run of the season by senior rightfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana).
In addition to Werry's second bomb in three games, senior designated hitterÂ
Alex Theiroff (Greenfield, Indiana) had a pair of triples and freshman leftfielderÂ
Chase Holzmeyer (Haubstadt, Indiana) had a triple and a double. Thieroff and Werry also finished the game tied with a team-high three RBIs, while Holzmeyer had a team-best three hits in the contest.
On the mound, junior right-handed starterÂ
D.J. Smith (Vincennes, Indiana) recorded his first win as an Eagle. Smith allowed four hits, one run, and struck out four in five innings of work to get the win. Freshman right-handersÂ
Shad Macke (Evansville, Indiana) andÂ
Ryan Lindquist (Chesterton, Indiana) filled in the middle innings, while senior right-handerÂ
Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) struck out the side in the ninth to finish the game.
USI resumes action Sunday in Louisville, Kentucky, when it plays Wayne State University in a neutral site doubleheader at Bellarmine University. The first pitch is slated for 11 a.m. (CST). The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field on March 6-7 for the Dunn Hospitality Invitational.
