OWENSBORO, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team made it two wins in a row after posting a 3-0 shutout of Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday morning in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI raised its record to 5-10-1 overall and 4-9-0 in the GLVC, while KWC fell to 5-13-1, 2-11-1 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles struck for the only goal they would need in the opening half when freshman defender Nolan Harvath scored his first collegiate goal at 39:04. Harvath was assisted on the play by sophomore forward Shane Cloutier.
USI kept up the offensive pressure in the second half and added a pair of goals to seal the match. Senior midfielder Will Reid posted his first goal of the season at 56:35 to increase the lead to 2-0, scoring off the rebound of a shot by junior forward Simon Rawnsley.
The Eagles' freshman midfielder Josh Kistner finished the scoring at 87:44 when he recorded his first collegiate goal off the rebound of a shot by Reid.
Overall, USI outshot KWC, 21-8, but the Panthers had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-2.
Between the posts, the Eagles were led to the shutout by freshmen Ben Dempsey and Keenan Johnson. Dempsey raised his record to the .500 mark at 2-2-1 and made four saves, while Johnson finished the final 13 minutes and made a save.
USI finishes the 2009 campaign on the road Sunday when the Eagles travel to Bellarmine University for a 1:30 p.m. (CDT). The Knights, who are 9-4-1 overall and 7-4-0 in the GLVC, host the University of Missouri-St. Louis tonight in Louisville, Kentucky.
