LANSING, Mich.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team fell to Ferris State University 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 in its first match of the Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Friday.
USI (10-11) struggled offensively in the first and second sets as the Bulldogs (16-6) held the Screaming Eagles to just 17 kills and a .086 attacking percentage en route to a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Eagles held a 16-15 advantage midway through the opening stanza and were down by a single tally late in the set, but the Bulldogs got back-to-back kills from Ashley Huntey and Arielle Goodson to grab a one-match lead.
After Ferris State hit .440 in a run-away victory in game two, the Eagles found themselves in a similar situation in the third frame as they were in the opening set. USI, which attacked at a .200 clip in the third game, held a 17-15 advantage, but Ferris State used runs of 6-2 and 3-0 to record the three-point win and complete the three-set sweep.
Senior outside hitter Courtney Bealor led the Eagles with a match-high 13 kills and a .423 attacking percentage, while senior setter Melanie Pund had 25 assists and 10 digs.
USI continues the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover this afternoon when it takes on Northwood University at 2 p.m. (CDT).
