EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team could not overcome a sluggish defensive effort Sunday as it fell to Maryville University, 4-0, on Senior Day at Strassweg Field.
Maryville (5-6-1, 4-4-1 GLVC) scored goals in the fifth and 21st minutes of the game to take a quick 2-0 lead, and then scored in the 42nd minute to extend its lead to 3-0 at the intermission.
USI (6-7-2, 5-5-1 GLVC), which outshot the Saints 14-9 in the opening period, had plenty of opportunities to put tallies on the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes of the contest, but Maryville goalkeeper Jena Casagrande made seven of her match-high eight saves in the first period to maintain the 3-0 lead.
The second half did not get much better for the Screaming Eagles, who lost senior defender Alison Conquest and freshman midfielder Paige Nuelle to red cards following a brief altercation. USI, which played a man down for the last 21 minutes of the contest, had just one shot on goal in the last 45 minutes.
Maryville, which also lost a player in the scuffle that resulted in two red cards and a pair of yellow cards, added a goal in the 86th minute of the contest to extend its lead to 4-0.
USI, which finished its 2009 home schedule with a 4-4-1 record, returns to action Friday at 5 p.m. when it visits the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Eagles play their final four regular season contests away from Strassweg Field.
