Eagles look to stop slide against rival Panthers

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team is looking to put an end to a season-long three-game losing streak when it hosts rival Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (8-7, 1-5 GLVC), which has not played an opponent in the GLVC West Division this season, finished what was arguably its toughest three-game stretch of the season Saturday with a 77-58 setback at Bellarmine University. USI also lost to top-ranked Northern Kentucky University and to nationally-ranked University of Indianapolis in the stretch of three games in seven days.

Sophomore guard Ellen Young (Salem, Illinois) led the Screaming Eagles with 18 points in the loss to Bellarmine, while fellow classmates Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) and Lauren Meneghetti (Munster, Indiana) chipped in 10 points apiece.

Young leads the Eagles with 13.1 points per contest this season, while Meneghetti and Newhart are averaging 10.5 and 10.3 points per game, respectively.

Senior forward/center Brittany Neuman (Huntingburg, Indiana) is averaging 7.5 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per appearance this season.

Kentucky Wesleyan (7-7, 2-3 GLVC) is coming off a 64-59 victory at Bellarmine last Thursday. The Panthers have four players averaging at least 10.0 points per game, led by junior center Candace Garrett and senior center Whitney Waddell.

Garrett is averaging a team-high 11.9 points per game, while Waddell is chipping in 10.2 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per appearance.

USI leads the all-time series with the Panthers, 39-24, and is 12-3 against Kentucky Wesleyan since 2000 despite last season's 76-58 setback in Owensboro, Kentucky.

The Eagles, who open a three-game homestand against the Panthers, begin West Division play January 22 against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. They finish the three-game spurt against Rockhurst University January 24.
