EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team had to withstand a late rush by Northwood University in the final minutes to win 1-0 Friday evening at Strassweg Field. USI raises its record to 2-1-0 overall, while Northwood falls to 0-3-0 in 2008.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward
Dan Dormeier (Newburgh, Indiana) scored the only goal the Screaming Eagles would need at the 70:18 mark of the final half. USI senior forward
Mike Bendzen (Evansville, Indiana) slipped the ball to Dormeier inside the penalty for the assist.
The Timberwolves' offense came to life in the final minutes with two shots and several close calls, but was not able to find the back of the goal. USI goalkeeper
Andrew Haley (Wentzville, Missouri) stood tall in goal for the Eagles, recording five saves and posted his second straight shutout.
Overall, Northwood outshot USI, 14-8, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
The Eagles concluded the four-match homestand Sunday at noon when Saginaw Valley State University comes to Strassweg Field. SVSU raised its record 1-2-0 with a 2-0 win at Oakland City University Friday afternoon.
