SPRINGFIELD, Mo.. – The 24th-ranked University of Sothern Indiana baseball team broke a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 nightcap win over Drury University and earned a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Missouri. The split takes USI's record to 34-18 overall and 22-7 in the GLVC, while Drury goes to 27-20 overall, 15-12 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles scored four times in the fifth on their way to breaking the losing streak with the 4-2 win. USI, which was trailing 1-0 after four innings, took its first lead of the day, 2-1, on back-to-back doubles by junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) and senior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana).

USI junior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) capped off the four-run fifth with a two-out two-run home run to make the score 4-1. Drury would get a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-2 final.

USI junior right-hander Matt Nichols (Evansville, Indiana) posted his second win of the year for the Eagles. Nichols (2-3) went 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.

After sophomore right-handed set-up man Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) finished the sixth for Nichols, junior right-handed closer Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) finished the game and posted his USI career-record tying 16th save of the year. Larsen pitched one inning and struck out one to earn the save.

In the opener, Drury scored six times in the first two innings and cruised to an 11-4 victory. USI was never able to get close in this game, pushing single tallies across the plate in the third and seventh innings and a pair of runs in the ninth.

The Eagles were led in the opener by Huebner and Pleiss. Huebner was three-of-five with a RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Pleiss was three-of-five with two RBIs.

On the mound, senior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) was unsuccessful in his first chance at setting a new USI single-season record for wins. Kehrt (8-2) only managed to go three-plus innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out two.

USI and Drury finish out the 2008 regular season Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
