USI sweeps Quincy in exciting fashion

EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader from Quincy University in exciting fashion Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI opened the day with a 16-0 shutout in game one, before coming from behind the nightcap for a 9-8 victory in 10 innings.

The Screaming Eagles raised their record to 13-8 overall and to a West Division leading 6-1 in the GLVC. USI has won nine of its last 10 games and is 11-4 during the homestand. Quincy fell to .500 at 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC.

In the 16-0 shutout of the Hawks, the Eagles pounded out 23 hits and had a pair of five run innings. USI sophomore shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) led the offensive explosion by going four-for-five with four runs scored, three RBIs, a home run and a double. The home run was a team-best third of the season for Fink.

USI junior third baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) followed Fink by with three hits and three RBIs, while five other Eagles had a pair of hits each.

On the mound, senior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) was dominate in his six innings of work. Kehrt struck out a career-high 12 batters, while allowing only two hits and a four walks. Senior right-hander Aaron Schmitt (Evansville, Indiana) pitched the final inning to finish the game for USI.

In the nightcap, the Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the ninth and one in the 10th to win 9-8. USI came back from deficits of 5-0 after five innings 8-3 after seven innings and 8-4 in the ninth.

The Eagles pushed the winning run across in the 10th on a throwing error Hawks' third baseman Jake Schaake. Schaake over threw first base on a ground ball by USI senior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana), allowing sophomore pinch runner Josh Jarboe (Connersville, Indiana) to score from second base.

USI was led in the second game by senior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana). Pleiss, who sent the game into extra innings by knocking in the tying run in the ninth, went four-for-five with a pair of RBIs.
