USI drops series finale to #5 GVSU

EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – The 29th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost the series finale to fifth-ranked Grand Valley State University, 10-6, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 3-6 overall, while GVSU goes to 4-1.

The first half of the game featured an offensive explosion by both teams. The Screaming Eagles spotted the Lakers a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but managed to bounce back to tie the game, 4-4, by the end of the second inning and take a 6-4 lead at the end of three.

GVSU retook the lead, 8-6, by stringing together four straight hits and a walk in a four-run fourth innings. The Lakers would seal the 10-6 win with a pair of runs in the sixth.

After both teams combined for 14 runs in the first four innings, the Lakers would score the only two runs of the last five innings. GVSU freshman right-hander Joe Jablonski shut down the USI attack for the final 6.1 innings to earn his first win of the year in relief.

On the USI side, junior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) pitched well in relief for the Eagles. Dewig allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four in his 5.2 innings of relief work.

Dewig followed to the mound junior left-hander Patrick Crider (Owensboro, Kentucky), who started the game for USI, and junior right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana), who took the loss in relief and falls to 0-1.

At the plate, USI had four players with multiple hits. Senior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) led the attack by going two-for-four with a double, a runs scored, and two RBIs.

Beaven was joined in getting multiple hits by junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana), who was three-for-five junior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana), who was two-for-five and senior designated hitter Josh Malone, who was two-for-three.

The Eagles will return to action Wednesday at noon when they will host Oakland City University for a rescheduled doubleheader.
