EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team shutout Wayne State University, 9-0, in the nightcap of a doubleheader to earn a split Monday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. WSU won the opener, 6-3, in 10 innings.
The Screaming Eagles (5-7) earned the split by scoring eight runs in the first four innings. USI plated one in the first, three in the second and third, and one in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. The final USI run was scored in the bottom of the sixth.
The USI offensive explosion was led by sophomore shortstopÂ
Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee). Fink was a perfect three-for-three with two runs scored, two RBIs, a home run, a double, and a walk. The home run, which was a solo shot in the fourth, was Fink's second of the year.
USI junior second basemanÂ
Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) also was perfect at the plate. Huebner was three-for-three with a run scored and a RBI.
The run in the first was all USI senior right-handerÂ
Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) would need to get the complete-game victory. Kehrt (2-1) allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out seven hitters in seven innings of work.
In the 6-3 extra inning loss, the Warrior (2-2) scored three times in the top of the 10th to win opener.
USI took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, only to see WSU score a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 advantage. The Eagles tied the score in the bottom half of the fifth, 2-2, but the Warriors answered with a run in the sixth to lead 3-2.
A second USI come-from-behind attempt came in the eighth when the Eagles tied the game, 3-3, on an RBI single by junior third basemanÂ
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana). The rally ended when senior designated hitterÂ
Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana) lined into a double play, doubling off Thieroff at second base.
USI sophomore right-handerÂ
Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) took the loss in relief for the Eagles. Geiger (0-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing the winning run to reach base in the 10th after pitching effectively for 2.1 innings.
The Warrior scored the game winning run and the two insurance runs off USI junior right-handerÂ

Senior left-handerÂ
Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) started the game for USI, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings of work. Julian also recorded six strikeouts.
Between Julian and Geiger, the Eagles got an effective 1.1 innings of work from junior right-handerÂ
Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana). Dewig allowed just two hits and struck out one.
O'Hair, who played shortstop in the first game, and senior centerfielderÂ
Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) led the way at the plate with two hits each.
