Eagles go cold in second half

Fall to Indianapolis, 63-56

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team shot just 18.2 percent from the field in the second half as it lost to the GLVC East Division-leading University of Indianapolis, 63-56, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (8-13, 3-10 GLVC) overcame a six-point deficit in the second half to tie the contest at 50 with less than six minutes to play in the game, but the Greyhounds outscored the Screaming Eagles, 11-4, in the final four minutes of the contest to pull out the win.

The Eagles, who led by as many as seven in the opening period, shot 40.0 percent in the first half to forge a 35-34 halftime edge. USI extended its lead to 41-39 in the first four minutes of the final period, but the Greyhounds used an 8-0 run to swing momentum into their favor.

Senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) and freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) each had 15 points to lead the Eagles in the scoring column. Senior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) added 11 points, while junior forward/center Ninette Evans (Memphis, Tennessee) led all players with eight rebounds.

Indianapolis (17-4, 9-4 GLVC), which was the first team in six games and the second in the last nine contests to out-shoot the Eagles, got a game-high 19 points out of senior guard Karla Mast. Freshman forward Samantha Meissel, who was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line, added 17 points.

USI returns to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when it hosts Rockhurst University at the PAC. The Eagles close out their four-game homestand with No. 6 Drury University.
