Rough first half grounds Eagles

QUINCY, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team could not overcome a dismal first half performance as it lost to Quincy University, 89-59, Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Arena.

USI (9-16, 4-13 GLVC) shot just 30.4 percent from the field in the opening period, 0-for-4 from three-point range, as it went into the break facing a 40-15 halftime deficit.

The Screaming Eagles led 10-7 early in the period, but a 20-0 Quincy run that lasted more than six minutes put the Lady Hawks up by 17 with less than seven minutes to play in the first half. USI also got into foul trouble in the opening frame, sending Quincy to the free throw line 15 times.

USI warmed up in the second half where it shot 48.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from behind the arc.

The Eagles cut Quincy's lead, which grew to 29 points in the early stages of the second half, to 20 points seven minutes into the final period. However, Quincy, which shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, used a 15-3 run to close the door on any USI comeback attempt.

Senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) and junior guard Brittany Darden (Guthrie, Kentucky) each scored 11 points to lead USI. Senior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) and freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) each chipped in 10 points, while junior forward/center Ninette Evans (Memphis, Tennessee) added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Quincy (17-8, 12-5 GLVC) got a game-high 23 points from sophomore forward Janette Burgin. Junior guard Jessica Keller added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while sophomore forward Lindsey Stellflue chipped in 14 points to round out the double-figure scorers.
