Eagles used balanced attack to top Cougars

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Five University of Southern Indiana women's basketball players reached double figures Monday evening as the Screaming Eagles cruised to a 79-55 victory over Mid-Continent University at the Physical Activities Center.

Sophomore guards Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) and Lauren Meneghetti (Munster, Indiana) paced the Eagles with 17 points apiece, while fellow classmate Ellen Young (Salem, Illinois) added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

USI (3-1), which shot 47.4 percent from the floor in the opening period, used runs of 12-0 and 8-0 to race out to a 46-32 halftime edge. Meneghetti and Newhart each scored 12 points in the first 20 minutes to put the Eagles in front at the intermission.

The Eagles, who recorded 17 steals, forced the Cougars (1-7) into 14 second-half turnovers and used runs of 12-2 and 10-2 to build a 29-point lead with 6:28 to play in the game. Young and junior guard/forward Abby Williams (St. Joseph, Illinois) led the Eagles in the second half with 11 and eight points, respectively.

Williams finished the contest with 10 points and three assists, while freshman guard Rinesha Soaper (Henderson, Kentucky) added 11 points and four steals to help the Eagles pick up their third straight win.

Senior forward/centers Brittany Neuman (Huntingburg, Indiana) and Ninette Evans (Memphis, Tennessee) finished with 10 and seven rebounds, respectively, as the Eagles held a 44-35 edge over the Cougars on the glass. USI, which converted 27 Mid-Continent turnovers into 28 points, also out-scored Mid-Continent 34-14 in the paint.

The Eagles return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CST) when they take on Hillsdale College (2-0) in the Indianapolis Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI also takes on Grace College (4-3) Saturday at 4 p.m.
