Eagles fall to IU, 93-49

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team fell to Indiana University, 93-49, Saturday in its only exhibition game of the 2008-09 season.

Junior guard/forward Abby Williams (St. Joseph, Illinois) led all scorers with 18 points and freshman forward Taylor Miller (Anderson, Indiana) tallied 11 points, but it was not enough as the Screaming Eagles saw the Hoosiers turn 36 USI turnovers into 44 points.

"Indiana is a physical team and they really got after basketball today," USI Head Coach Rick Stein said in his post-game interview with WSWI's Nick Mellinger. "We just weren't tough enough with the basketball and it hurt us."

The Eagles kept the contest close throughout the first five minutes of the game, but a 16-4 spurt turned a 9-7 IU edge into a 25-11 lead with 9:22 to play in the opening frame.

USI struggled to keep up with the Hoosiers in the second period as Indiana shot 63.6 percent from the field and used a 15-7 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to put the contest out of reach.

As a team the Eagles shot 39.7 percent from the field in the first half and 30.8 percent in the second half. USI had 14 offensive rebounds, but could only manage 14 second-chance points.

"We missed some shots that we will make during the season," Stein said. "I thought we had good looks at the basket, but rushed some shots.

"Overall, I thought it was a great experience for our girls," Stein continued. "We did some good things in short stints and were able to force them into 20 turnovers."

USI opens the regular season November 15 when it takes on Abilene Christian University in the St. Edwards University Shootout in Austin, Texas.
