Eagles drop third straight game

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team saw a 10-point second half lead evaporate as it fell to Quincy University, 69-64, Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (7-9, 2-6 GLVC) led 53-43 with just over 10 minutes to play in the game, but a 15-0 run that lasted more than five minutes and saw senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) foul out of the game gave the Lady Hawks a 58-53 lead and momentum heading into the final stages of the contest.

The Eagles cut the deficit down to 58-56 when freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) hit a three pointer, but Quincy sophomore forward Janette Burgin hit one of her game-high four three-pointers in the next possession to put the Hawks up, 61-56, with 4:26 to play in the contest.

Quincy (11-5, 6-2 GLVC) extended its lead to seven, but a 5-0 spurt got the Eagles back to within two points with less than a minute to play.

With the shot clock winding down on Quincy's next possession, Burgin, who finished with 16 points, answered USI's surge with her fourth three-pointer, which put the Hawks up 69-64 with less than 30 seconds to play.

The Eagles got off just one shot in the final 30 seconds as they fell for the third time in as many games.

USI, which trailed by as many as 10 in the first half before going into the intermission facing a 33-30 halftime deficit, stormed out of the gates in the second half.

After trailing by as many as 10 in the first half and 33-30 at the break, USI found itself facing a 39-34 deficit with just over 17 minutes to play. USI, though, saw Baines score its next seven points to give the Eagles a 41-40 lead.

The Eagles did not stop there as freshman guard Lauren Meneghetti (Munster, Indiana) connected on a medium range jumper to give USI a 43-40 lead. Baines extended USI's lead to five points and a Newhart field goal with just over 11 minutes to play in the contest gave the Eagles a 47-40 advantage.

Junior forward/center Ninette Evans (Memphis, Tennessee) capped off USI's 16-1 run with a three-point play with 10:43 left on the clock to give the Eagles a 50-40 lead.

Quincy answered with one of its eight trifectas on the next possession, but Meneghetti put the Eagles up by double digits (53-43) for the second time when she connected on a three-pointer with 10:17 remaining in the game.

USI was led by Baines, who posted her second double-double in the last three games. Baines finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) chipped in 13 points, a career-high eight rebounds, and four assists.

Newhart added 11 points and a pair of assists, while Evans chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Jessica Keller racked up a game-high 26 points to lead the Hawks, who were 17-of-22 (.773) from the charity stripe. Burgin added 16 points.

USI returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the PAC.
