Three-point barrage grounds Eagles

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team got a career-high 16 points from senior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) and 14 second-half points from senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana), but it was not enough to overcome six three-point field goals by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Kayla Ming as the Screaming Eagles fell to the Rangers, 70-63, Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

Ming drained all of her three pointers in the second half, helping the Rangers overcome a 32-30 halftime deficit and hand the Eagles their second straight setback.

USI (6-6, 1-3 GLVC) came out of the gates early, forging a 26-12 lead throughout the first 14 minutes of the contest. Jolly scored eight of her 16 points in the first 14 minutes as the Eagles looked to have the contest in cruise control.

The Rangers (9-4, 3-2 GLVC), however, scored the next 14 points to tie the game at 26. Sophomore guard Allison Smaglik drained a pair of three-pointers to start the run, while sophomore guard Jen Moran scored six of her 10 first-half points to pull the Rangers into a tie with less than four minutes to play in the opening half.

The Eagles had a three-point lead early in the second half, but a bucket by senior forward Chelsey Schadler followed by the first of Ming's six second-half trifectas gave the Rangers their first lead since they held a 2-0 advantage early in the contest. Schadler finished UW-Parkside's 7-0 run to give the Rangers a 38-34 lead, one that it would not relinquish for the remainder of game.

The Rangers extended their lead to as many as 10 later in the game, but USI fought back to cut the deficit to four points (54-50) following junior guard Carly Clendenen's (Anderson, Indiana) second three-pointer of the contest.

Ming, however, stopped USI's 6-0 run with her fifth three pointer of the half. She hit her sixth long-range shot less than two minutes later to extend the Rangers' advantage to 62-52 with less than four minutes remaining in the game.

The Eagles cut that margin to four points with a 1:26 remaining in the game, but a 5-0 run ended any hope of a USI comeback.

USI was led by Baines and Jolly, each of whom finished with 16 points. Baines added six rebounds, while junior forward/center Brittany Neuman (Huntingburg, Indiana) finished with four points and a game-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) chipped in five points, three assists, and a game-high five steals.

Ming led all scorers with 19 points, while Schadler and senior guard/forward MacKenzie Heise added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Moran rounded out UW-Parkside's double-digit scorers with 10 points.

USI returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Lewis University at the PAC. The Flyers (7-4, 4-1 GLVC) defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College, 55-50, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Thursday evening.
