USI sweeps second straight doubleheader

Game 1: USI 5, Lewis 0

Game 2: USI 21, Lewis 4

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team recorded a second straight doubleheader sweep in three days and has won five in a row by winning a pair of GLVC games at Lewis University Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois. USI won the opener, 5-0, and the nightcap, 21-4.

The victories raised the Screaming Eagles' record to 26-11 overall and 15-7 in the GLVC, while the Flyers fall to 4-29 overall, 3-20 GLVC.

In 5-0 USI victory, senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) won his third straight game on the mound. Summers (6-1), who has not given up an earned run in his last 21 innings, allowed just three hits and struck out five in seven innings of work to record his team-best sixth victory of the year.

At the plate, USI was led by senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) and sophomore designated hitter Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana). Both were three-for-four with Slade scoring a run and Werry scoring a pair of tallies. USI sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) had a pair of RBIs in the opener.

In the 21-4 nightcap win, senior right-hander Adam Vetter (Dyer, Indiana) pitched six innings to pick-up his fifth victory of the year. Vetter (5-1) scattered eight hits and allowed four runs, while striking out four in the win.

USI sophomore right-hander Dan Kissel (Evansville, Indiana) and junior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) finished the game on the mound for the Eagles.

Offensively, USI had 15 hits and drew 16 walks (tied a USI single-game record) to score 21 runs. Slade led the offensive outburst by driving in six runs, while junior first baseman Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana) knocked in four more RBIs.

USI junior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) and junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) scored five times and four times, respectively. Mastroianni, who has swiped 34 bases this year, also came to within one stolen base of the USI single season record of 35 set by Todd DeWeese in 1989.

The Eagles and the Flyers conclude the four-game series noon Sunday at Brennan Field. The first game will be a GLVC contest, while the second will be a non-conference match-up.
