EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team began a four-game homestand by splitting a doubleheader with Quincy University Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI won the opener, 4-3, in 11 innings, while Quincy took the nightcap, 8-1.

The Screaming Eagles take their record to 17-9 overall and 8-6 in the GLVC, while the Hawks go 15-12 overall, 8-8 GLVC.

USI senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) won a pitchers duel with Quincy right-hander Nick Dunning in the 4-3 game 1 victory. Summers (4-1) scattered nine hits and allowed three runs in pitching all 11 innings, while striking out eight batters. The eight strike outs tied a career-best for Summers.

Dunning almost matched Summers in the loss. He allowed eight hits and four runs in 10.1 innings, while striking out 12.

USI senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) provided all of the offense for the win. Slade gave USI a 3-2 lead in the third inning with a one-out three-run triple and scored the winning run on a double by sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) in the 11th.

In the nightcap, Hawks' lefthander Greg Dowdall dominated the Eagles to win 8-1. Dowdall won by scattering four hits and allowing just one unearned run in seven innings.

USI's only run of the second game would come in the sixth when junior centerfielder Michael Beaven scored on a fielding error.

Eagles senior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) picked up his first loss of the year in the nightcap. Vetter (4-1) allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) in four innings of work.

The Eagles and the Hawk conclude the three-game series with a single nine inning game Sunday at noon.
