Game 2: Suspended due to darkness

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a two-game losing skid with a 5-0 rain-soaked win over Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The nightcap of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness with USI leading 5-2 in the top of the eighth and will resume March 20 when the Screaming Eagles travel to Owensboro, Kentucky, to play the Panthers.

The game one victory raised the Eagles records to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC, while the Panthers fell to 3-15 overall, 0-4 GLVC.

After a two-hour rain delay in the opener, USI got on the scoreboard with the only run they would need in the bottom of the third. USI senior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) scored on a throwing error by KWC catcher Steven Lee. Lee committed the error when trying to throw out USI senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana), who was stealing second base.

The Eagles sealed the victory with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Panthers were held scoreless by USI junior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana). Kehrt (4-0) scattered six hits and struck out nine for the seven-inning complete-game victory.

In the nightcap, USI scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead before the game was suspended. The three-run outburst was highlighted by an RBI triple by Mastroianni.

USI junior second baseman Kevin O'Hair was the offensive catalyst for the Eagles in the second game. O'Hair drove in sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) to give USI a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. He also started the Eagles' rally in the seventh with a one-out double before scoring the go-ahead run on a KWC throwing error by shortstop Chris Smith.

Before USI and KWC can resume the nightcap next Tuesday, the Eagles will go on the road to play Northern Kentucky University Saturday and Sunday at Champion Windows Field in Florence, Kentucky. The first pitch each day is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CDT).
