10th-ranked USI's comeback falls short

FINDLAY, Ohio— The 10th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team's comeback in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional fell short, losing to seventh-ranked Grand Valley State University, 90-83, Sunday evening in Findlay, Ohio. USI finishes the year tied for the school record for wins with a 29-6 record.

The difference in the game came in the first half when the Lakers built a pair of 15-point leads and held the Screaming Eagles to just 42.9 percent from the field (9-21). GVSU led at the intermission 43-30. USI also had 11 turnovers in the opening stanza.

In the second half, the Lakers extended the lead to as many as 17 points, 47-30, before the Eagles could get their offense into gear. USI began to chip away at the lead, holding GVSU to only six free throws for six minutes between the 10:04 and 4:26 marks of the second half.

The Eagles got the margin down to just three points, 84-81, but could not get any closer. The Lakers would make six-of-eight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

USI was led by senior Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) with 16 points. Hall was followed in the scoring column by junior guard Kenny Page (Indianapolis, Indiana) with 15 points senior center Rashard Sullivan (Miami, Florida) with 14 points and senior forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) with 11 points.
