EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 12th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team earned the 700th victory in the history of the program on Homecoming, defeating the University of Missouri-Rolla, 98-80, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 21-3 overall and 10-3 in the GLVC, while UMR falls to 7-14, 2-11 GLVC.
The 700th victory comes on the heels of USI reaching 20-or-more wins for the 15th straight season on Thursday night. USI has averaged 18.9 victories its 37-year history.
The Eagles took control of the game late in the first half on a 10-0 run with under four minutes to play in the opening stanza and posted a 12-point 51-39 lead. The Miners would respond by cutting the lead to seven points before the Eagles were able to take a 10-point 54-44 lead into the intermission.
The first half was highlight by senior guardÂ
Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana). Hall broke his own school record by hitting his 82nd and 83rd three-pointers of the season. He would hit one more long range field goal in the second half and would finish the night 20 three-pointers ahead of last season's pace.
UMR cut the USI lead to six points, 56-50, in the opening minutes of the second half, but would get no closer. USI boosted the margin to as many as 24 points, 92-68, before settling for the 98-80 final.
The Eagles finished the evening shooting 60.3 percent from the field (38-63), marking the fourth time this season that the squad finished a game shooting over 60 percent.
USI senior forwardÂ
Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) led five players in double-figures with 17 points, include five three-point field goals. Van Winkle was six-of-nine from the field and five-of-eight from long range.
Hall and junior guardÂ
Kenny Love (South Bend, Indiana) followed Van Winkle with 13 points each, while senior centerÂ
Rashard Sullivan (Miami, Florida) and senior forwardÂ
Nick Brooks would finish the game with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Sullivan led the Eagles attack on the glass with 13 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the year. USI outrebounded UMR 37-27.
The Eagles return to the road next week when they return the favor and visit the University of Missouri-St. Louis on February 8 and UMR on February 10. Game time for Thursday at UMSL is 7:30 p.m., while Saturday at UMR has a 3 p.m. tip-off.
