Eagles drop regular-season finale

Qualify for GLVC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball lost to Drury University, 76-57, Saturday afternoon in its regular-season finale.

Despite the loss, the Screaming Eagles (16-11, 10-9 GLVC) will enter the GLVC Tournament as a wild card and the fourth seed from the West Division.

The Eagles held their ground with the Panthers for a better part of the first half. However, the Panthers used an 8-0 run toward the end of the half to turn a 22-21 edge into a nine-point advantage late in the opening period.

Drury (20-7, 14-5 GLVC), which led 32-24 at the break, never allowed the Eagles any closer than six points during the second half as it went on to the win and sole possession of the GLVC West Division title.

After falling behind by 16, the Eagles used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to nine points with five minutes to play. The Panthers, however, clamped down and held the Eagles scoreless throughout the final five minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Senior guard Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin) led the Eagles with 17 points, 15 of which came from behind the arc. Senior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) added 15 points, while junior guard Akiya Alexander (Evanston, Illinois) chipped in 13.

Junior guard Molly Carter led the Panthers with 17 points, while sophomore forward Lauren Gregory finished with 10 rebounds.

USI will play the East Division's top seed, Lewis University, Friday at either 6 or 8:30 p.m. in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. The official bracket and game times of the tournament, which is at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, will be announced on GLVC website (www.glvcsports.com) later this evening.
