Eagles wrap up home slate

Host SIUE, Quincy

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team wraps up its 2006-07 home slate when it hosts Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday at 5:15 p.m. and Quincy University Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.

With two weekends and four games remaining on the Screaming Eagles' regular-season slate, USI (14-9, 8-7 GLVC) finds itself knee-deep in a battle to qualify for the GLVC Tournament, which is slated for March 2-4 at Roberts Stadium.

The Eagles are currently tied with Quincy for third in the GLVC West standings, a position that will change following Tuesday evening's contest between SIU Edwardsville and the Lady Hawks.

USI also is two games back of West Division front-runners Drury University and SIU Edwardsville.

If the league tournament started today, USI would be the final wildcard in the eight-team GLVC Tournament. Drury, which has the tie-breaker over SIU Edwardsville due to head-to-head victories, would be the number one seed from the West Division, while the Cougars and Lady Hawks would be the second and third seeds from the West. Quincy holds the tie-breaker over the Eagles due to head-to-head victory.

The GLVC's East Division also would have four teams in the post-season tournament if it started today. Lewis University, which has officially clinched a spot in the conference tournament, would be the number one seed from the East, while Northern Kentucky University and Kentucky Wesleyan College would be the second and third seeds, respectively. Bellarmine University would be the number one wild card.

Teams on the outside looking in include the West Division's University of Missouri-Rolla as well as the East Division's University of Wisconsin-Parkside and University of Indianapolis. USI has the tie-breakers over UW-Parkside and UIndy, but UM-Rolla has the tie-breaker over the Eagles.

The GLVC Tournament takes the top three seeds from each division, plus the top two wild cards.

When the Eagles take the court this weekend, they will be looking to avenge a pair of tough setbacks earlier this season to SIU Edwardsville and Quincy.

The Eagles lost to the Cougars, 96-62, in Edwardsville, Illinois, back in January. They lost to the Lady Hawks, 71-59, in Quincy, Illinois, two days later.

SIU Edwardsville (17-6, 10-5 GLVC) has won four of the last five games, while Quincy (15-8, 8-7 GLVC) has won three of the last four games, including a 60-55 victory at Drury last Saturday.

Prior to Saturday's contest, the Eagles will honor their five seniors: forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois), forward/center Sarah Buldtman (Metropolis, Illinois), guard/forward Michelle King (Columbus, Indiana), guard Leah Stormont (Haubstadt, Indiana), and guard Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin).
