Eagles fly past Central Missouri

Baines enters record books

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Five Screaming Eagles reached double figures as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team blasted the University of Central Missouri, 92-65, Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (2-0), which shot 51.6 percent from the field, used a 12-0 run to turn a 23-19 advantage into a comfortable 16-point lead with less than four minutes to play in the first period. Senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the opening frame help USI to a 43-28 halftime edge.

Baines finished the game with a game-high nine rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a career-high five blocks. Her 25 points lifted her into 20th-place on USI's all-time scoring list with 792 points and brought her to within 69 of her 1,000th career collegiate point—she scored 134 points as a freshman at IUPU-Indianapolis.

The Jennies (1-2), which led just once in the contest, cut the Eagles' lead to 13 early in the second half.

Following a 30-second timeout by USI, junior guard Brittany Darden (Guthrie, Kentucky) drained the first of four second-half three pointers to give the Eagles a 50-34 advantage and swing momentum back into USI's favor.

Darden finished the contest with 20 points, 16 of which came in the second period, on 8-of-9 shooting. Her three-pointer sparked a 15-3 run that put the Eagles up by 25 with less than 12 minutes to play in the game.

The Eagles, behind the strength of nine three-pointers, built their lead to as many as 37 late in the game as they improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2004-05.

Freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) chipped in 13 points and five assists, while junior guard Carly Clendenen (Anderson, Indiana) and senior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Clendenen also had four assists and two steals in the victory.

Central Missouri got a team-high 17 points out of senior guard Lindsey Maple. Sophomore center Stephanie Hicks had 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds in the loss.

USI finishes its season-opening three-game homestand Saturday when it hosts the University of the Cumberlands (Kentucky) Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles open GLVC play December 1 when they travel to Owensboro, Kentucky, to take on rival Kentucky Wesleyan College.
