USI men's soccer concludes 2007 with victory

USI 4, HSSU 0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. —The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team concluded the 2007 campaign with a 4-0 shutout of Harris-Stowe State University Wednesday afternoon at the Goebel Soccer Complex. USI finishes 2007 with a 6-12-1 overall record, while HSSU ends the year 3-14-1.

The Screaming Eagles ended the year by winning their last two matches, doubling their win total of a year ago.

After a scoreless first half against HSSU, USI exploded for four goals in the final half. Eagles' sophomore midfielder Paul Hutchens (Libertyville, Illinois) led the way with a goal and two assists in the second half offensive surge.

Hutchens' two assists helped propel the Eagles to a 2-0 lead shortly after halftime. He was credited with his first assist when sophomore forward Kyle Leffel (Newburgh, Indiana) scored his first goal of the year off the rebound of Hutchens' shot to make the score 1-0 at 48:15.

Hutchen' second assist came when he passed the ball to freshman midfielder Michael Simcock (England), who increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal at the 57:47 mark. The goal was Simcock's second of the season.

Simcock would return the favor seven minutes later when he passed the ball to Hutchens for USI's third goal of the half at 64:30. Hutchens' fourth tally of the year ranks him second on the team in goals scored.

The Eagles would finish the scoring when sophomore midfielder Will Reid (Plainfield, Indiana) made the score 4-0 off a pass from freshman midfielder Justin Fox (Avon, Indiana). The goal was Reid's first of the year and the first of his collegiate career.

Between the posts, USI goalkeeper Brad Cadden (Carmel, Indiana) recorded his second straight win and shutout. Cadden made three saves, facing seven shots, and raised his record to 2-0-0 in 2007.
