USI women's soccer stumbles in overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team was a player down for 65 minutes against Bellarmine University before falling in overtime, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. USI falls to 6-9-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 10-7-1, 4-6-1 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles took the first of two leads 11:16 into the match when USI senior forward Katie Grossman (Newburgh, Indiana) scored for the 1-0 advantage. The unassisted goal was Grossman's fourth of the year.

Before USI could take its 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, USI senior defender Casey Alexander (Evanville, Indiana) was ejected at the 30:11 mark for receiving her second yellow card in less than 10 minutes. She had received her first yellow at 23:49.

The Knights tied the score, 1-1, just 1:56 into the second half. BU freshman defender Cristina Fugedy scored the goal on a breakaway at 46:56.

USI regained the lead, 2-1, at 59:31 when senior defender Kara Georgeff (Highland, Indiana) scored an unassisted goal. The goal was Georgeff's second of the year.

Bellarmine set the stage for overtime when Knight's sophomore defender Kaitlin Kurilla headed in the tying goal at 74:10.

Five minutes into the "sudden victory" overtime, Bellarmine scored the game winner on the only shot of period. BU freshman defender Alissa Ruether broke the 2-2 tie with a goal at 95:02 on a shot from the top of the box.

Overall, Bellarmine out shot USI, 17-10, and had an advantage in corner kicks, 9-1.

The Eagles finish the 2007 regular season with a pair of home matches next weekend. USI hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis October 19 at 5 p.m. and the University of Missouri-Rolla October 21 at noon. The USI-UMR match-up on October 21 will be Senior Day for the Eagles.
