Eagles fall to Quincy

QUINCY, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team suffered its second consecutive setback Saturday afternoon as Quincy University pinned a 71-59 setback on the Screaming Eagles at the Pepsi Arena.

Despite shooting 58.3 percent from the field in the second half, USI watched a 26-25 halftime deficit turn into a seven-point hole less than two minutes into the final period.

USI (11-4, 5-2 GLVC) committed 27 turnovers and watched the Lady Hawks shoot a blistering 85.7 percent from behind the arc in the second half. Quincy (10-5, 4-4 GLVC) drained 62.1 percent of its shots from the field in the second half after shooting just 30.8 percent in the first half.

The Eagles led for a good part of the first half, but 16 first-half turnovers allowed the Lady Hawks to stay in the game and eventually take a one-point lead at the intermission.

After falling behind by seven in the second half, the Eagles surged back, cutting the Quincy lead to one point when senior guard Leah Stormont (Haubstadt, Indiana) connected on a three-pointer with just under 14 minutes to play in the game.

USI, however, missed on a golden opportunity to get the lead as it failed to capitalize on a foul that gave the Eagles the ball right back following Stormont's three-pointer.

Instead, Quincy reeled off five straight points to take a 45-39 advantage with less than 13 minutes to play in the game. The Lady Hawks, behind 16 second-half points by senior guard Jenny Wisser, extend their lead to as many as 13 and never looked back.

Junior guard Akiya Alexander (Evanston, Illinois) led the Eagles with a game-high 22 points, while senior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) and junior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) added 14 and 10 points, respectively.

In addition to Wisser's 16 points, Quincy got a team-high 18 points out of sophomore guard Jessica Keller and 15 points out of senior forward Alex Wieser. Freshman forward Janette Burgin added 14 points for the Lady Hawks.

The Eagles return home Thursday when they host long-time GLVC rival Bellarmine University at 5:15 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center. USI also hosts Northern Kentucky University next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the PAC.
