ALLENDALE, Mich. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team started the 2007 campaign by dropping a 3-2 decision to Ferris State University on the first day of the Lakers Soccer Tournament. USI completes tournament play in Michigan Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST) when its plays host Grand Valley State University, which was ranked seventh in the NSCAA Division II Preseason Top 25.
After Ferris State drew first blood with a goal at 25:53, junior midfielder
Jessica Stawick (Indianapolis, Indiana) recorded USI's first goal of the year to even the score. Stawick stole the ball from the Bulldog defense in the box and score unassisted.
The Eagles took its first lead of the year, 2-1, when junior midfielder
Katie Grossman (Evansville, Indiana) scored an unassisted goal at the 59:17 mark.
The Bulldogs would rebound with the tying goal two minutes later at 61:02 and the game-winner at 83:23. The Eagles would have two more shots on goal in the final minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Following Sunday's match, the Eagles will open the 2007 GLVC schedule on the road when they play at Lewis University on September 1. USI's first home game will be September 8 when it hosts Drury University at Strassweg Field.
