Eagles advance in NCAA II Tournament with 1-0 victory

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—Sophomore third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) hit a run-scoring double in the bottom of the first inning to provide the No. 24-ranked University of Southern Indiana softball team with all the offense it needed to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan College Friday afternoon in the second round of the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament.

The Screaming Eagles (39-16), the third seed in the tournament, got a great pitching performance from senior Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Illinois) as they held on for the 1-0 victory. McNaughton (17-10) scattered six hits throughout seven innings to pick up the complete-game victory.

The Bobcats (44-23) had a scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth inning when they had runners at the corners with two out. However, senior catcher Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) caught WVWC pinch-runner Sarah Baise trying to steal second base. Davis's throw to senior shortstop Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) forced Baise to retreat back to first base, but Nugent ran her down to apply the tag for the third out.

The Eagles, who have never advanced this far in the NCAA II Tournament, face Northern Kentucky University Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the right to play in Sunday's championship game.

NKU (40-19) defeated Grand Valley State University, 10-0 in five innings, Friday. In other regional tournament action Friday, No. 4-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville eliminated Lewis University with its 1-0 victory, while No. 19-ranked Gannon University eliminated Wayne State University with its 4-1 victory.
