SAUGET, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team pounded out a season-high 18 hits to win the nightcap 10-3 and earn a spit with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Illinois. USI lost the opener 3-0 after producing just two hits.
After the doubleheader split, USI is 13-21 overall and 10-20 in the GLVC. UMSL goes to 10-16, 9-14 GLVC.
Leading the way in the second game victory was three USI freshmen – centerfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) catcherÂ
Kirby Dunagan (Greenburg, Indiana) and leftfielderÂ
Jeremy Edwards (Famersburg, Indiana).
Werry was four-for-five with two doubles, a single, three runs scored and a RBI, while Dunagan was four-for-six with a double, two singles, and a RBI. Edwards was a home run short of a cycle with a triple, double, single, and three RBIs.
USI senior right-handerÂ
Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) picked up his first victory of the year by going seven of the nine innings. Watson (1-3) allowed just seven hits and two runs, while striking out two. Freshman right-handerÂ
Dan Kissel (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore right-handerÂ
Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) finished the game for Watson and USI.
In the opener, UMSL junior right-hander Matt Tesson (3-2) allowed just two hits and two walks to earn the victory. USI junior right-hander
 Adam Vetter (Crown Point) took the loss going six innings and allowing four hits and three runs, two unearned.
Vetter (3-2) also struck out seven UMSL batters and has had at least seven strike outs in four of his seven starts.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field this week for a four-game homestand. The homestand begins Tuesday when USI hosts Bellarmine University for a GLVC noon doubleheader.
